The Self-Pay Patient Book Review

If you’re looking to save thousands or even tens of thousands of dollars on health care cost then the book “The Self-Pay Patient: Affordable Healthcare Choices in the Age of Obamacare” by Sean Parnell is a book you should seriously consider reading. And because it’s such a great book that puts you in charge of your own health care, I have decided to write a review about the book. So let’s begin the review with a general overview of what this book is all about.

self pay patientIf you’re looking to save thousands or even tens of thousands of dollars on health care cost then the book “The Self-Pay Patient: Affordable Healthcare Choices in the Age of Obamacare” is a book you should seriously consider reading. And because it’s such a great book that puts you in charge of your own health care, I have decided to write a review about the book. So let’s begin the review with a general overview of what this book is all about.

Overview of Book

As indicated, this book not only tells you how to control your healthcare cost, but also how to take control of your own healthcare overall. It also shows you how to find affordable healthcare, outside of conventional insurance. The book also explains:

How by paying for cash you can get healthcare services often at the fraction of the cost of traditional health insurance.

How to opt-out of Obamacare without having to pay a tax for being uninsured.

How to locate alternative type’s coverage that are less expensive than traditional insurance.

How you can pick and choose your own doctor.

How to find pharmacies, hospitals, doctors, and other medical providers that provide huge discounts for cash payment.

And lastly he discusses how by becoming a self-pay patient, you can escape bureaucratic medicine (insurance companies and the government).

Next I would like to give you a little more insight and detail about what you will learn after reading this book. And the best way to do that is to give you a brief overview and examples of various chapters of the book.

Chapter 2: Funding Healthcare without Health Insurance

In this chapter he goes over numerous low cost alternatives to traditional health insurance. Or in-other words these are alternative sources to fund your health care needs. More specifically he details three relatively low-cost alternatives you and your family can use in the event of an illness or serious injury. For instance, he talks about “Healthcare-Sharing Ministries” as an alternative low-cost funding source. This is an alternative funding source that I am currently using and one that I highly recommend. If you want more information about the benefits of Healthcare-Sharing Ministries then go to the following web link where I detail the benefits of this great alternative funding source: Affordable Health Care

Chapter 3: Primary Care for Routine Health Needs

In this chapter Sean talks about primary care alternative sources you can use for routine health needs. For example, he talks about finding doctors who ask that their patients pay them (e.g. cash payment) just like any other service provider such as a mechanic or accountant. The benefits of this model is that the doctor will offer much lower prices than the insurer-paid, bureaucratic medical model. He also talks about many other alternative sources you can use for your primary care health needs.

Chapter 6: Imaging, Screening, Labs

In this chapter he provides you with various resources and tips on how to find high-tech imaging (like CAT scans and MRIs), screening, and laboratory testing at reasonable prices.

Chapter 9: Public and Private Charity Care

In this chapter Sean talks about the various charity care resources (public and private) that are available. This is like a “last resort” and is for individuals whose financial situation is so dire that they need to seek charity care to pay their medical bills. He provides both free and reduced priced charity care resources. Here’s an example (but not covered in book).
There is a local hospital in my hometown called Christ Hospital. And what they do is offer charity care and financial assistance to low income individuals. For instance, you can have your medical bill reduced by 50% or more based on your income.

Chapter 10: Options for Employers

In this chapter he talks about various options that are available for employers in regards to offering healthcare benefits to their employees. And even more significantly he talks about healthcare options that are available for employers in the age of Obamacare.

Final Summation and Review

I think the best way to sum this book review is to give you a quote from a review that I read on Amazon. Here is the quote:

“The author does a very nice job of explaining and describing the wide variety of options available to patients for most aspects of their healthcare needs. In layman’s terms, Parnell gives valuable information that most consumers can use to expand their horizons into the myriad of choices for healthcare services. First and foremost, patients need to know that everything has a price just like at the grocery store, clothing store or car dealership. Patients can be empowered to purchase healthcare services just like other goods and services, by actually knowing the price and being able to shop around. In our business we use the phrase “Shopping for Surgery.” Readers of this book can learn to “Shop for Primary Care” or “Shop for Imaging Services”.”

This quote and review that was posted on Amazon pretty much sums up what this book is all about – and it is this. Don’t let bureaucratic medicine (insurance companies and the government) dictate to you and decide for you what your healthcare needs should be. Instead “empower yourself” and put yourself “back in charge” of your own personal healthcare needs!
